A well-maintained paddock is essential to guarantee the welfare of horses. Its preparation requires attention to key details that provide safety, comfort and access to essential resources.
The first thing is to select a suitable location. It must be well-drained land where puddles and mud do not form, in order to avoid injuries to the horses. Firm ground with a slight slope is ideal so that water flows and does not stagnate.
The delimitation of the paddock is another crucial aspect. The fences must be sturdy and high enough, at least 1.5 metres, so that the horses cannot jump and escape. It is advisable to use materials such as treated wood or PVC fencing, which are safe and durable. Likewise, the access gates should be wide and easy to open, so that the animals do not get trapped in an emergency.
It is also important to have a shelter or shed within the paddock where the horses can take cover from the elements, on both hot and rainy days. In addition, access to fresh, clean water is essential. A good drinking trough, preferably an automatic one, will facilitate the animals' constant hydration.
Finally, regular maintenance must be carried out to remove objects that could be dangerous — such as large stones or fallen branches — and to check that the fences and shelter are in good condition. With these measures, the paddock will be a safe and welcoming space for the horses.
