The Agricultural and Livestock Service of Chile recently reported the appearance of several cases of equine infectious anaemia, a disease in which many animals present no symptoms while acting as virus carriers, which exponentially increases the number of infected equines.
Meanwhile, should symptoms be present, some of the most common include fever, swelling in the hands and feet, and paleness of the skin or mucous membranes, among others. Currently, if a horse is infected with EIA, the decision is made to euthanise it in Chile. All of this is supported by the protocols established by the World Organisation for Animal Health and the Agriculture and Livestock Service of Chile.
As far as Spain is concerned, the last outbreak of equine infectious anaemia dates back to 1983, with two small outbreaks in 2017 in the cities of Ávila and Cáceres.
