Irish Olympic rider Kevin Babington remains closely linked to the equestrian world seven years after the serious accident that changed his life. The fall on August 31, 2019 during the Hampton Classic Grand Prix caused him a complete spinal cord injury and left him paralyzed from the neck down, but he did not break his connection with horses.
Babington grew up in Ireland as the youngest of eleven siblings and discovered horseback riding at the age of nine. After completing his training with the British Horse Society, he moved to the United States with just $300 to begin his career as a professional jumper.
Over the years, she represented Ireland at European Championships, World Equestrian Games and Nations Cups. She also competed at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, where she finished in fourth place, tied for fourth in the individual vault competition.
His sporting career was interrupted in 2019, when he suffered a fall with Shorapur during a triple during the Hampton Classic Grand Prix. After receiving hospital care and undergoing surgery to stabilize the cervical vertebrae, he began a long rehabilitation process.
During that period, he experienced a particularly emotional reunion with Mark Q, one of his most beloved horses, whom his family had transported to the parking lot of the rehabilitation center. The horse brought its snout close to Babington’s lap, leaving a mark that reflected the bond they shared.
Although he has not been able to return to the saddle, the horses continue to be part of his daily routine. Babington resumed his activity as a trainer from the wheelchair and admits that this new perspective has allowed him to pay more attention to the small details and better understand the fears of his students. His goal is to help both beginners and riders and jockeys who compete at the highest level.
Her daughters, Gwyneth and Marielle, both established professional amazons based in Florida, currently represent one of her main connections to the competition. Gwyneth also competed with Mark Q, her father's former horse, achieving good results alongside him.
The family and the horses have been fundamental pillars throughout the entire process. To them is added Samantha, an assistance dog of the Australian Shepherd breed who stays by her side and helps her in various daily tasks.
Following the accident, Babington also stepped up his commitment to the safety of riders and amazons. The Kevin Babington Foundation, created in 2019, raises funds to help people who suffer spinal injuries while jumping and promotes the research and use of protective equipment such as airbag vests, helmets, and safety harnesses.
The foundation develops various charitable initiatives throughout the year. Among them is the Kevin’s Rockstars Lip Sync Fundraiser, an event held every March in Wellington that usually attracts between 500 and 650 attendees. American competitions can also contribute through the Babington Benefit Classes, allocating all or part of the registration fees to the charity.
His story is recounted in the book “Babington: Triumph, Tragedy, Inspiration”, written by Jeff Papows and Michael Cruciotti. The publication revisits his career, the consequences of the accident, and the work carried out subsequently to support other families and raise awareness about the risks of equestrian practice.
Babington admits that transitioning from being a top-level athlete to living in a wheelchair was an especially difficult transition. However, he has found in teaching, in his family, and in his intact bond with horses a new way to remain within a sport that continues to hold an essential place in his life.
