Cuenca celebrates 70 years of history with its National Show Jumping Competition and all places booked

This 2026, the Cuenca National Show Jumping Competition reaches a particularly significant milestone: seventy editions as part of the San Julián festivities and the history of national show jumping. The competition, which will begin this Thursday, 27th August, and run until Sunday, 30th, arrives at its anniversary with all available places filled.

The official presentation took place this Wednesday at Cuenca City Hall, where the main details of an edition that will bring together 49 male and female riders and a total of 104 horses were unveiled.

Among the announced participants are regular names from the competition such as the military rider Ángel Cerdido and Miguel Ángel Fierro from Cuenca, as well as the Olympic rider Albert Hermoso, the female rider Carolina Sandoval, José Bono from Toledo, the Argentine Juan Ignacio Álvarez Fermosel and Carlos Zárate, who returns to Cuenca after an excellent season.

The sports programme will take place over four days, with four events each day. In addition, local male and female riders will have their own space in the 1.10-metre events, with the aim of offering them the opportunity to gain experience and continue advancing towards higher categories.

One of the highlights will come on Saturday with the celebration of the Diputación de Cuenca Small Grand Prix. Sunday will be the turn of the most important event on the programme, the Cuenca City Council Grand Prix, which will bring to a close four days of competition featuring showjumping heights of up to 1.40 metres.

This year's edition will also maintain one of the most characteristic traditions of the Cuenca contest: horse racing betting. After mobilising around 80,000 euros in the last edition despite the technical issues recorded, the organisation hopes to exceed that figure this year and approach 90,000 euros. The single bet will cost two euros and the forecast bet, three.

The competition will also incorporate a charitable aspect, as part of the activity will be linked to a donation intended for the Cuenca Pro-Mental Health Association Vivir.

The Provincial Council will once again cede the La Hípica venue for the holding of the competition, which will coincide during these days with the Handicraft Fair and will once again become one of the meeting points of the San Julián festivities.

Seventy years after its first edition, the Cuenca National Show Jumping Competition is thus facing one of its most special anniversaries with fully booked entries, more than a hundred horses and four days ahead in which the city will once again have show jumping as one of the main attractions of its festivities.
