Katie Magee and Treworra arrive this week at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials, one of the major five-star competitions on the international eventing calendar. The British rider returns to Burghley accompanied by a horse with which she has built a particularly consistent track record and following a season in which the partnership has continued to make strides forward at the highest level.
Magee and Treworra's five-star scores precisely reflect that consistency. Their four appearances in competitions at this level have yielded four top-twenty finishes, a track record that makes the pairing one to watch during the British competition.
Treworra, a 17.2 hands dark bay gelding owned by Angela Hislop, has recorded several notable results during 2026. His fifth place at Badminton has been accompanied by a fourth place at Burnham Market, a sixth at Burgham and a seventh at Hartpury.
“He is exactly the kind of horse you would love to see competing at this level and I am extremely lucky to be able to ride him,” explains Magee. The Briton has also known Treworra since a very early stage in her sporting career. “I’ve had him since he was five years old and he has always given me fantastic feelings across country. He just keeps on improving and we’ve had some incredible days with him.”.
Burghley is also not unfamiliar territory for either of them. Magee and Treworra made their debut at the event in 2025 and finished in twentieth position, completing one of the most recognisable cross-country courses on the international calendar for the first time.
“It is a true privilege to be able to ride in a place like Burghley. It is a world-class competition and venue, and jumping so many historic fences on the cross-country was like a dream come true,” the female rider recalls of that first experience.
Despite the strong results accumulated and the horse's progression, Magee prefers to approach this new participation without setting himself targets exclusively related to qualification. His priority is to manage each day and ensure that Treworra is in the best possible condition.
“The results are always a huge added reward to everything else. We have to take it day by day and make sure he feels fantastic. I try not to think too much about the result, but rather to complete every step and focus on what I can control,” he points out.
A fundamental figure in Magee's sporting development has been Nicola Wilson, individual European champion and team Olympic medallist for Great Britain. Wilson, who won team silver at the London 2012 Olympic Games and four European golds throughout her career, currently acts as the equestrian's coach and mentor.
“Nicola is amazing. She’ll be at Burghley to help us prepare and she’s always at the end of the phone if I need to talk to someone,” explains Magee, 2025 British Open champion alongside Treworra and Intermediate-level champion with Cushlas Indigo.
The relationship between the two also goes back years. Magee grew up having Wilson as one of her great sporting role models and seized every possible opportunity to train alongside her.
“She was the local equestrienne whom we all admired and I trained with her whenever I could. Her experience and knowledge are enormous and I’ve been extremely lucky to be able to benefit from them. It’s incredible to have her support,” she acknowledges.
