The Longines Global Champions Tour Madrid returned to the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid from 15 to 17 May with figures reflecting the growing economic weight of the equestrian industry. More than 23,000 attendees, close to 150 riders, over 200 horses and a prize fund exceeding one million euros make the Madrid CSI5* a major hub of activity for tourism, hospitality and services.
Beyond the sporting aspect, the event has transformed into a platform for economic impact for the capital. The presence of international spectators, VIP and hospitality areas, alongside the participation of sponsors and companies linked to the sector, generates a direct economic movement in hotels, catering, commerce and transport. The competition also attracts profiles with high purchasing power, which increases the economic return during the competition weekend.
This scenario forms part of the growth of the equestrian industry in Spain, which currently contributes 7,392 million euros to the national GDP, representing almost 0.7% of the Spanish economy’s GDP. The sector also generates around 150,000 direct and indirect jobs, including activities related to breeding, competition, equestrian tourism, training and the ancillary industry.
Spain has more than 3,400 riding centres and over 2,000 equestrian sports clubs spread across the country. Andalusia, Catalonia, Madrid, Aragon, Extremadura and Castilla-La Mancha are among the regions with the highest level of activity, both in terms of the number of facilities as well as federated licences and the competitive calendar.
The staging of events of this level places Madrid within the circuit of major European sports capitals, alongside international events in disciplines such as tennis, athletics, or Formula 1. Equestrianism thus continues to expand its presence within the Spanish sports economy and increases its capacity to attract investment and business activity.
