Richard Vogel won the CHIO Aachen Grand Prix with United Touch S in a season where his main objective is the World Championship, which will be held at these very same facilities in the month of August.<\/p>\n
Vogel already knows what it is like to reign in the continental elite. Last year he clinched individual gold with the son of Untouched at the European Championship held in Casas Novas, a triumph that placed him among the great figures of international show jumping. Now, the German rider faces the possibility of achieving a historic feat: becoming the second rider in history to win European individual gold and, the following year, also conquer individual gold at a World Championship.<\/p>\n
Up to now, this has only been achieved by the Briton David Broome, who won the 1969 European Championship in Hickstead riding Mr Softee and, a year later, was crowned world champion in La Baule with Beethoven.<\/p>\n
Richard Vogel, during a great season in which he has won five Grands Prix, could match this statistic if he wins the individual gold medal in Aachen.<\/p>\n
Eric Navet and Jeroen Dubbeldam won them consecutively, but in reverse order, as they did so first at the World Championship and then at the European Championship. In the case of the French rider, who won both golds with Quito de Baussy, after winning the World Championship in Stockholm in 1990, he triumphed at the European Championship in La Baule in 1991. The Dutch rider won the 2014 World Championship in Caen with Zenith and the following year, also with the son of Rash, at the 2015 European Championship in Aachen.<\/p>\n
The list of riders who have won these two gold medals is completed by the Germans Hans G\u00fcnter Winkler, one of the true legends of this sport, and Hartwig Steenken. Winkler won the 1954 and 1955 World Championships, taking the individual gold medal at a European Championship in 1957. Three golds with three different horses. Hartwig Steenken won gold with Simona at the 1971 European Championship in Aachen and at the 1974 World Championship in Hickstead.<\/p>\n
Richard Vogel could make a major entry onto this list.
